Foundational Training – Block Plan

Modules 1 and 2

This intensive 7-day training, held in a retreat-like environment, provides participants who have met all the prerequisites for training to be a teacher with an opportunity to directly experience the 8-session programme of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and learn about the theoretical underpinnings of MBCT and its structure and sequence. You will practise teaching elements of MBCT to one another in pairs, with supervision and feedback from the instructors and peers. There will be extensive periods of silence throughout these modules.

Module 3

Module 3 can be satisfied by completing a teacher-led residential retreat of a minimum of 4 days. The retreat should focus on the practice of mindfulness in the Vipassana tradition or should be designed specifically for teachers and trainee teachers of MBCT. The OMC occasionally offers such retreats, often of about a week in duration. They are also available at retreat centres such as Gaia house in England or at similar centres in other places. The OMC may in the future offer additional retreats that satisfy Module 3. Information will be available on the website.

Module 4

Module 4 involves further teaching on the theory underpinning MBCT, and its adaptations; and learning to teach all the MBCT course elements to small groups with more advanced teach-backs and; beginning to understand the structure and developmental progression of MBCT over 8 weeks and beyond. Learning is informed by greater embodiment developed in Module 3.

Module 4 is the last component of Foundational Training to Teach MBCT in the block format. Completion of Modules 1, 2 and 3 is required in advance of attending Module 4. In order to fully benefit from the Module 4, participants ideally will have completed all Foundational Workshops prior to attendance. Where this is not possible, you may still attend however completion of the Foundational Workshops is required before moving on to Step 2 of the training pathway.

Training Pathway Workshops

In addition to the four modules, 6 Workshops are an essential part of Step 1 (Foundational Training) of the pathway. Workshops at the OMC are directed by leaders in their field, within mindfulness training, teaching and research.  The Workshops are:

  1. The C in MBCT
  2. An Introduction to Buddhist Psychology
  3. Enquiry in MBCT
  4. Research and Evaluation
  5. Orientation and Assessment
  6. Working with Groups in Mindfulness-based Interventions
