Amishi Jha joins the OMC for an evening of discussion

In our next keynote session Amishi Jha joins the OMC for an evening of discussion to explore Mindfulness, Attention, and High-Stress: Training our Minds to Strengthen our Resilience, hosted by OMC Director Willem Kuyken.

In this session, Amishi Jha will share with us her knowledge and understanding regarding the science of attention and how mindfulness training can strengthen attention to improve lives, especially when we are experiencing protracted intervals of high stress.

Amishi Jha studies how to keep the brain’s attention system in peak shape over high-pressure intervals. In her laboratory at the University of Miami, she uses functional MRI, electrophysiological recordings, and behavioural analysis techniques to understand how the brain’s attention system works, why it sometimes fails us, and if and how it can be trained for greater focus and less distractibility. What she has discovered is that without intervention, attention is compromised, and attentional lapses increase over high demand and high stress intervals. Business, military, and emergency services professionals, students, and athletes all show this pattern. Yet, when mindfulness training is offered to these cohorts, attention and well-being can be strengthened and protected. She has shared her research findings with many outlets including the UK Parliament, NATO, the World Economic Forum, and at the Pentagon.

Willem Kuyken, Sir John Ritblat Family Foundation Professor of Mindfulness and Psychological Science.  Willem is a Principal Investigator at the University of Oxford Mindfulness Research Centre and Director of the University of Oxford Mindfulness Centre.  Willem’s work focuses on depression and evidence-based approaches to depression. In particular, his research examines how mindfulness and mindfulness-based programs can prevent depression and enhance human potential across the lifespan.
