MBCT in Brazil – OMC and the Mente Aberta Centre (in English and Portuguese)

Through our relationship with Mente Aberta Centre in Brazil, the Oxford Mindfulness Centre is working to achieve its goal of training a new generation of mindfulness teachers across the world. Professor Marcelo Demarzo of Mente Alberta Centre on what the partnership has achieved and plans for the future.

In 2017 a partnership between the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, led by Professor Willem Kuyken, and Mente Aberta Centre, led by Professor Marcelo Demarzo, was initiated with the aim of implementing and propagating Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in Brazil. MBCT is a protocol designed and used with a clinical population, specifically depressed patients, with the goal of preventing depressive relapses.

Em 2017, uma parceria entre o Oxford Mindfulness Centre (OMC), liderado pelo professor Willem Kuyken, e o Centro Mente Aberta, liderado pelo professor Marcelo Demarzo, foi iniciada com o objetivo de implementar e propagar a Terapia Cognitiva Baseada em Atenção Plena (MBCT – Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) no Brasil. O MBCT é um protocolo desenhado para ser usado com populações clínicas, especialmente em pacientes deprimidos, com o objetivo de prevenir recaídas depressivas.

The MBCT program presents robust evidence of its effects in the scientific literature, and is also being used in the UK’s Heath System. The intention is to train mental health professionals to teach the MBCT protocol in Brazil, and also to do scientific research on this matter. The mid to long-term intention is to make Mente Aberta a training Centre with local teachers, in association with the Oxford Mindfulness Centre. A first Foundational Training took place in São Paulo, Brazil, in July 2017 led by Dr. Timothy Sweeney and Dr. Paul Bernard.

O programa MBCT apresenta evidências científicas robustas sobre seus efeitos, e está sendo usado no NHS (Sistema Universal de Saúde do Reino Unido). A intenção da parceria é formar profissionais de saúde mental para ensinar o protocolo de MBCT no Brasil, além de fazer pesquisas científicas sobre o assunto. A intenção de médio e longo prazo é fazer do Mente Aberta um centro de treinamento em MBCT com professores brasileiros, em associação com o Centro de Mindfulness da Universidade de Oxford. Um primeiro “Módulo Fundamental de Treinamento” ocorreu em São Paulo, Brasil, em julho de 2017, liderado pelos Drs. Timothy Sweeney e Paul Bernard.

Another two foundational trainings will happen in 2018, and one more in 2019. These will be led by Professors Marcelo Demarzo and Willem Kuyken, together with the international MBCT team members, Dr. Timothy Sweeney and Dr. Paul Bernard from the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, and Dr. David Wilson and Dr. Karen Cicuto from Mente Aberta – Brazil.

Outros dois treinamentos fundamentais acontecerão em 2018, e mais um em 2019, que estão sendo liderados pelos professores Marcelo Demarzo e Willem Kuyken, junto com os membros internacionais da equipe de MBCT, Dr. Timothy Sweeney e Dr. Paul Bernard do Centro de Oxford, e Drs. David Wilson e Karen Cicuto do Mente Aberta – Brasil.
