The OMC is a collaboration between the University of Oxford Psychiatry Department and the Oxford Mindfulness Foundation (OMF), a UK-registered charity.  It has been at the forefront of MBCT research, teaching and training since it was founded by Professor Mark Williams in 2008, and is now directed by Professor Willem Kuyken, the Sir John Ritblat Family Foundation Professor of Mindfulness and Psychological Science.

The role of the OMF is to deliver teaching and training programmes informed by the University’s research and use these programmes to contribute to further research.  Today the OMF works with international partners and operates around the world.  Its Chief Executive Officer is Sharon Hadley and Peter Yiangou is Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Overview of the role

We are looking for an experienced mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) teacher and trainer to provide leadership of our portfolio of MBCT courses for the general population. These are structured as (1) an introductory 3 module course, (2) a face-to-face 8-week MBCT for Life course, (3) a Taking it Further curriculum for MBCT graduates and (3) a free weekly online mindfulness class for anyone with an established mindfulness practice. In addition we offer particular MBCT curricula for particular populations, e.g., the Finding Peace in a Frantic World for University students and workplaces.

The post will form part of the senior leadership team in the OMC and would appeal to someone who wishes to support the teaching and training elements at the heart of our ambitious vision for universal access to mindfulness.

The post holder will report to the Chief Executive Officer and work closely with the senior management team within the OMC. They will liaise closely with dedicated administrators and supervise external teaching partners.

This is a home based post with occasional travel to the OMC offices in Oxford with the possibility of occasional travel to events (when delivered in person).

Responsibilities

This job description summarises the main duties and accountabilities of the post but is not comprehensive: the post-holder may be required to undertake other duties of similar level and responsibility.

  1. In line with the Business Plan; manage and develop the OMC’s MBCT courses portfolio
  1. Liaise with research colleagues to ensure all programmes are regularly reviewed and developed as high quality, evidence-based courses drawing on the latest rigorous literature. Liaise with Research the Assistant and Coordinator to ensure all our courses are rigorously evaluated and the findings used to shape best evidence-based practice
  1. Ensure all courses are taught by teachers who meet good practice guidelines and adhere to the OMC’s Ethical Code
  1. Maintain and develop high quality teaching materials in line with good practice and OMC’s branding and house style
  1. Develop and manage a process for the production, dissemination and version control of OMC’s materials in multiple languages
  1. Work with communications and media teams to coordinate communication and promotion from the OMC – sharing information on introductory courses on a global scale using a range of platforms and communications methods
  1. Teach introductory courses – normally three 8-week courses per year
  1. Train teachers to teach – normally training on one cohort per year (approx. 21 training days)
  1. To manage the team of external teachers and provide group mentoring and guidance for core teaching staff and teaching partners working with the OMC
  1. Work closely with the CEO to contribute to the wider work of the OMC and promote best practice and maximum accessibility across all our impact activities
  1. Ensuring safeguarding protocols are up to date and understood by all OMC teachers

Other Duties

  1. Deputising for the CEO and representing the OMC at senior levels, as and when appropriate
  1. Providing support to other projects being conducted by the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, as time allows and agreed with the CEO

Selection Criteria

Essential

  1. Experience of complex and high volume event planning and scheduling, handling multiple competing dates and teacher contract management
  1. Mindfulness curriculum development experience including programme adaptations to accommodate latest research findings
  1. Experience of managing geographically dispersed teams of teachers, offering leadership, guidance and mentoring as appropriate
  1. Proven track record of developing quality training materials of an excellent standard. Version control experience along with an understanding of translation challenges
  1. Experience and understanding of communications impact and the importance of public information sharing
  1. Excellent eye for detail in all areas of communication – materials, email, social media etc
  1. Experienced mindfulness teacher having taught a minimum of 9 courses
  1. Trained to teach MBCT
  1. Experienced in training, mentoring and supervising mindfulness teachers
  1. Resourceful and resilient in working with challenges, finding solutions and identifying resources to solve problems, as appropriate doing so both as part of a team and independently 
  1. An organised but flexible approach to work. Able to manage activities and to balance competing demands and deadlines and remains effective and positive under pressure
  1. Excellent collaboration, team working and interpersonal skills, recognising and working with own and others’ strengths. Able to liaise effectively with colleagues and participants. Experience of working with colleagues at all levels and as part of a team structure
